Affordable alternative housing tenure pathways: Whānau Māori experiences

This project explores Māori experiences of alternative housing tenure pathways, including shared equity, rent-to-buy and whānau co-ownership arrangements. Drawing on in-depth interviews across Aotearoa, the research highlights how whānau navigate misinformation, intergenerational trauma, financial literacy requirements and constrained housing choices in order to achieve stability and belonging. Case studies of **Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei’s Kāinga Tuatahi papakāinga and He Korowai Trust further illustrate how kaupapa Māori principles can reshape tenure design. The findings reveal that alternative models are not simply technical innovations, but responses to systemic exclusion.
